                                                         •  What is stalling of the steam trap?

When process fluid is circulated through the equipment for a specific batch operation, the steam demand varies with the circulation rate and with the process temperature. A pneumatically operated temperature control valve senses the change in the temperature to regulate steam supply in the equipment.

In the beginning, when process temperature is low, large quantity of steam is pushed through the equipment. As the temperature starts rising, the temperature sensor sends a feed back to the feed valve to reduce steam throughput. This causes drop in the steam pressure due the throttling action, resulting into reduced differential pressure across the trap.

Whenever the trap is made to discharge condensate against the back pressure, the reduced pressure difference affects trap discharge capacity causing the condensate to accumulate in the steam space. Now the process temperature starts dropping causing the valve to open more allowing more steam in the equipment.

This hunting action creates trap to stall affecting the process directly. In most condition the trap down stream of the equipment is considered to be the culprit and the normal complaint would be about the malfunctioning of the steam trap.

What is the best solution to avoid stalling of steam traps?

The best way of getting control over stalling is to install a Pump and Trap Combination.

What do I have to consider with the loading gantries?

A loading gantry is a special facility to load petroleum into railway wagons and road tankers. Each place is equipped to handle various grades of petroleum products requiring varying degrees of pumping temperature.

You should use a high quality Spirax Marshall Vacuum Breaker to take care of this possibility such that entire oil is discharged into the tank whenever the hose is disconnected.

Should I install a condensate recovery system although my boiler house is about 2000 meters away
    from the process plant?

Because the quality of the feed water has to be very high (DM water) it is economically viable for any refinery to recover condensate. The monetary loss through waste of condensate is bigger than you might think.

With Flash Vessels you can generate low pressure steam from high pressure condensate and Power Pressure Pump Packaged Units for returning the condensate.

Maybe you have equipment with large steam consumption but you want to drain your condensate because of contamination. In this case Spirax Marshall can help you with a Condensate Purity System with pH control complete with valve and Pressure Powered Pump.

Which traps are correct selection for high pressure (60 bar g, 105 bar g etc.) steam line drain?

Spirax Marshall has a wide range of Thermodynamic Steam Traps for high pressure applications. Please click on TD Traps for more details.

Are Thermodynamic Steam Traps suitable for steam tracing applications?

No, Thermodynamic Steam Traps drain condensate at steam saturation temperature. For any steam tracing applications, Balanced Pressure Thermostatic Steam Trap (BPT) is the most correct selection.

BPT traps drain condensate at 10 or 20 °C below the steam saturation temperature and thus use Sensible Heat in the condensate for trapping purpose.
This results in savings of the line steam.

Can I recover condensate from steam tracing lines?

Yes, Complete tracing line condensate can be recovered. Specially designed Condensate Manifolds can be used to collect and drain the condensate.

•  How can I trap the 1/4" steam tracing line?

You can use Spirax TD 259 1/2" Thermodynamic Steam Trap for this application for a 1/4" line. In this case a Thermodynamic Steam Trap is the most suitable solution.
